Gibson Machinery LLC now distributes the full line of Terex® compact construction equipment to customers in Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The Terex compact equipment line is made up of more than 45 unique product models, including skid steer loaders, compact track loaders, wheel loaders, compact excavators and loader backhoes.

“We are pleased to welcome Gibson Machinery as a new Terex compact equipment distributor,” said Dean Barley, general manager, Terex Construction Americas. “They have sold and serviced some models of Terex compact equipment line in the past, and we are excited to officially add them as a full-line distributor. The Terex line gives Gibson Machinery customers more equipment options to meet their specific jobsite needs from one supplier.”

Gibson Machinery was founded in April 2003 by Lee and Larysa Gibson. Today, Gibson Machinery has two locations serving customers — their corporate office in Oakwood Village, a suburb of Cleveland, OH, as well as a satellite office in the Pittsburgh suburb of Oakdale, PA. The company provides full sales and service offerings, including new and used equipment sales, product support, rental and service technicians.

According to Co-Owner and President, Lee Gibson, traditionally their business has been heavily focused on selling and servicing to customers in the scrap and recycling markets with larger equipment. They decided to take on the Terex compact construction equipment line now to expand their growth opportunities in these markets, as well to attract new business from customers who primarily focus on construction-related applications, including sitework and excavating.

“The demand for smaller equipment is huge, and continues to grow, in our territory,” says Gibson. “As new projects are started in our area, particularly in the oil and gas markets, it is important for us to have the right equipment options available. With Terex’s long history and good reputation for quality equipment in the construction market, the compact line is the right fit for our business as we look for more opportunities to meet customers’ equipment needs.”

In addition to offering a full line of products and services, qualified Gibson Machinery customers who purchase Terex compact construction equipment have financing options through Terex Financial Services™. Powered by a Tier 4 interim compliant Scania® DC9 370 hp engine, the new Terex TA300 Generation 9 articulated truck is designed to keep productivity levels high, fuel consumption low and cycle times short. The proven fuel-efficient design of the Generation 9 TA300 boasts a 12 percent reduction in fuel consumption for fewer refueling stops, as well as more than a 2 percent in horsepower and a 6 percent increase in peak torque for better overall acceleration, over its predecessor.

“With a maximum payload of 30 tons, a body dump cycle time of 20 seconds and a 22.9-yd3 heaped capacity body, customers will benefit from low cost-per-ton per hour when moving material,” says Ken Emmett, product manager, Terex Construction. “And, its high-capacity cooling system provides excellent performance in all climates, from arctic to desert conditions.”

With a world-class emissions-compliant engine and exhaust brake, this new Generation 9 truck provides excellent rim pull and power in haul applications. The TA300 is equipped with a ZF fully automatic with manual override transmission and retarder, with six forward gears and three reverse gears. It has a maximum torque of 1,309 lb-ft at 1,400 rpm, and when coupled with the 100 percent differential locking action, this class-leading performance enables this truck to go where others can’t follow. The maneuverability and tractive effort means the truck is well suited to such diverse applications as quarrying, mining, construction and road maintenance.

The standard Independent Front Suspension (IFS) system on the TA300 provides a smooth ride when traveling over rough terrain, making it easier to handle and increasing productivity. In addition to achieving quicker haul cycles, shock loads and vibrations are also reduced, increasing component life, enhancing operator comfort and reducing driver fatigue.

Another important feature of the Gen 9 TA300 — and all Terex articulated haulers — is the oil-cooled multiple-disc brakes on each axle, which provide extended brake component life, reduced service intervals, lower operating costs, and better overall braking performance in comparison to traditional dry-disc brake systems which are fitted as standard by other leading manufacturers.

The Gen 9 TA300 also has a new ergonomic cab designed to provide operators with comfort and control.  Control positions and instrument groupings have been arranged according to operator feedback. The cab also benefits from reduced interior noise levels, an improved steering wheel, more effective air conditioning, a high-quality sound system and new mirrors.

Interior aesthetics have been updated to anthracite grey with a matte finish to reduce glare.

Maintenance is simple to perform on the TA300. From the wide opening angle of the electronic-lift hood to ground level access to the major components, every consideration has been given to servicing the TA300. Service technicians can easily complete under-hood service thanks to the wide platforms on both sides of the engine.

Engineered for the toughest applications around the world, the new Generation 9 range of Terex articulated trucks are powered by Scania® engines which are renowned for high uptime and reliability, underpinned by a worldwide service network. Back-to-back testing with the new Generation 9 Tier 4i TA300 and the previous model (Tier 3 TA300) demonstrates that the new range is not only more productive but also more fuel efficient.

Dedicated to reducing downtime, the service points on Terex articulated trucks are designed for quick and easy access. The electronic-assisted hood raise and the fully tilting cab simplify access to major components and ground level service points, which further reduces downtime.

As well as reduced downtime, lower cost of ownership is a key feature of Terex artic haulers. All models in the Generation 9 range benefit from oil-cooled multiple-disc brakes on each axle providing extended brake component life, reducing service intervals and operating costs, and improving overall braking performance compared to traditional dry-disc brake systems that are fitted as standard on other leading manufacturers’ trucks.

The Terex cab is developed around the operator to improve comfort, efficiency and productivity. The new ergonomic cab has reduced interior noise levels, more effective air conditioning, a high-quality sound system, and even a new steering wheel and mirror arrangement. Interior aesthetics have also been updated to anthracite grey with a matte finish to reduce glare.

The smallest truck in the range boasts a hauling capacity of 20.3 yd³ (15.5 m³) and is powered by an impressive 311 hp (232 kW) engine, making the Gen 9 TA250 the perfect partner for any construction project in the 25-ton class market.

With a 370 hp (276 kW) engine, the Gen 9 TA300 leads the way as one of the most powerful truck in the 30-ton class market, and this power combined with a heaped capacity of 22.9 yd³ (17.5 m³), means the Gen 9 TA300 is one of the most productive articulated trucks available today. Another class leading feature of the updated TA300 is the fully independent front suspension, which is fitted as standard. This innovative design, which is also available as an option on the Gen 9 TA250, greatly reduces operator fatigue and increases machine stability, enabling these machines to excel in rough terrain environments.

Completing the Terex range of Gen 9 articulated trucks is the powerful TA400 which has a maximum payload of 40 tons and a heaped capacity of 30.3 yd³ (23.3 m³).  It has a gross power of 444 hp (331 kW), and with six forward gears and one reverse in addition to a two speed drop box, the Gen 9 TA400 can travel up to 37.3 mph (60 km/h).

At home on sites ranging from sand and gravel quarries to coal mines and road construction projects, the new Gen 9 Terex articulated trucks are designed to keep your productivity levels high, fuel consumption low and cycle times short. In short, Terex has the right articulated dump truck for every application.

Preparing your compact excavator for working in the winter months

Written by: Amber Reed, Performance Marketing, West Des Moines, Iowa

Provided by: Terex Construction, Southaven, Mississippi

Don’t let the “Brrrrr!” of winter slow down the “Vroom!” of your compact excavator. Before Old Man Winter arrives, get your equipment ready to work — even when “the weather outside is frightful.”

Working in a Winter Wonderland

As the summer construction season winds down, it’s time to start thinking about what your compact excavator will need to work in the winter months.

According to Jesus Santos, product specialist for Terex Construction, if you plan to run your excavator in the colder temperatures, make sure it is properly outfitted to maximize the productivity of your operator and your excavator. In addition to an enclosed, heated cab for the operator’s comfort, make sure your excavator is equipped with an engine block heater to keep the diesel fuel from gelling up while the machine is off.

Also, your excavator should have a built-in heating system for your machine’s vital components such as the hydraulics, auxiliaries and the engine — to keep these areas warm when the temperatures aren’t.

Before you start working for the day, Santos recommends taking the time in colder temperatures to warm up your excavator’s engine and hydraulic oil. Make sure your operators understand that they can’t just jump in the cab and go. “Your compact excavator will have slower hydraulic response time at the beginning of its workday in freezing conditions,” says Santos. “Although warming up the excavator is always a good idea, it will not improve the hydraulic response time — machines need to operate for about 30 minutes before the hydraulic systems will begin to respond better.”

Santos continues, “When working in colder temperatures, you and your crew should use common sense when it comes to your excavator’s operation: Operators need to implement the same operating procedures as when working in mud, including driving slowly; making wide, three-point turns; and avoiding abrasive, rugged or sharp surfaces.

“Driving in extreme cold should be done with great caution,” says Santos. “The rubber tracks on your compact excavator are stiffer in freezing temperatures and much more susceptible to wear and tear.”

As the weather conditions change throughout the day, your operators should be aware of how the excavator is responding. Santos recommends: The colder it gets, the more frequent the maintenance checks should be.

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Following the manufacturer’s recommended guidelines for cold-weather operations is a must, says Santos. Your excavator’s owners’ manual will spell out specific tasks to do before the weather drops below freezing and the snow starts to fall.

At the end of the summer construction season (after approximately 1,000 hours of use), you should change the engine and hydraulic oils to fluids specifically designed for winter use.

During the winter months, Santos advocates conducting routine maintenance checks on your compact excavator before and after use — these checks should include the antifreeze, water in the radiator and the fuel, as well as the engine and hydraulic oil, to make sure none of these liquids have frozen or gelled. And, make sure the battery cables are properly fastened, and that the battery is charged and ready to go.

Before start-up or after sitting idle, clean out any ice or snow that has accumulated in the tracks, and check that the engine compartment and chassis are free of debris. It is also a good idea to make sure the windows and lights are clean, and that the tracks are in good condition and properly tensioned. Make sure you reference the owners’ manual for the manufacturer’s specific guidelines to caring for your excavator’s rubber tracks.

To prevent corrosion and contamination from sand and salt used in the winter months, Santos recommends washing down and thoroughly cleaning your excavator after each use, while the machine is still warm. The washdown process is the perfect time to remove any embedded foreign objects from the tracks and to lubricate all moving parts.

“It is also an ideal time to check for any loose, worn, cracked, bent, broken or missing components — replace these items immediately.” finishes Santos.

Proper care of your compact excavator during the cold winter months will go a long way in protecting your valuable investment, increasing your machine’s life, longevity, and of course, productivity.
